When producing ceramic pieces out of a cast mold, slip is thrown into the cast and let dry until a shell is formed. Creating a mold with two additional exits allows casting different objects out of the same mold by simply changing the amount of slip; this first theoretical exercise produces three different-sized mugs from one mold.
